Poached Pears in Red Wine with Chocolate Sauce

• 2 firm pears (such as Bartlett), peeled, cored, and halved
2 cups dry red wine
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
2 whole cloves
2/3 cup semisweet chocolate bits(about 5 oz.)
2 oz. (1/2 cup) slivered nuts such as almonds

Place the wine, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a shallow sauce pan and bring to a low simmer, reduce the wine by half.  Add the peeled pears, cover and simmer for about 20 to 25 minutes. They should be crisp tender when pierced with a thin knife tip. Remove the pears from the wine and let them cool. Meanwhile as the pears are cooling continue to simmer the wine and reduce it to a thick glaze.

Place the chocolate pieces in a bowl over gently simmering water, stirring until melted. Place one pear half on each of four plates and drizzle the reduced wine over and around each of the pear halves, and then top each with one quarter of the melted chocolate and nuts.
